Bipolar Disorder in Athletes

Bipolar disorder in athletes is not something that comes to my mind when you think about someone playing a professional sport. It really came out once I started to do research and saw all these athletes who did have it and had to deal with it while playing. One player that I have noticed was in the news recently was Brandon Marshall. Marshall is an NFL Wide Receiver for the New York Giants. Before being traded to the Giants, he played for multiple times. Everyone thinks that the reason for him bouncing around so much from team to team is because of his bipolar disorder. Coaches from the previous teams he has played think he is a liability in the locker room. He would get into all different types of altercations with his teammates causing bad locker room chemistry and issues with teammates.

Another big athlete you might have heard of that has bipolar disorder is Metta World Peace or Ron Artest. Before he changed his name, Artest was a basketball star for the Indiana Pacers and many other teams. Something that he is known for that is not basketball, is the brawl that started at the Palace of Auburn Hills, home of the Detroit Pistons. That night a huge brawl started by someone from the stands throwing some type of drink at Artest. This set him off, and he went running into the stands. Could this have been because of his bipolar disorder?

  1. That is really serious! It's very bad that there are athletes who are being recruited with untreated bipolar disorder. From what I'm reading, it sounds like none of the owners of these professional sports teams and coaches of the team seem to care and are not trying to help any of the athletes who have this disorder; hopefully, I'm wrong and they already did something to resolve the issues. Bipolar Disorder is a very serious mental disorder and it should be taken seriously, especially knowing that there isn't a cure and that there is more to the Illness then what we already know. To answer your question, I believe that it was because of his bipolar disorder.
