Miki Kowalski 10/27/17 HST 2000 Bipolar Disorder in Athletes Bipolar disorder in athletes is not something that comes to my mind when you think about someone playing a professional sport. It really came out once I started to do research and saw all these athletes who did have it and had to deal with it while playing. One player that I have noticed was in the news recently was Brandon Marshall. Marshall is an NFL Wide Receiver for the New York Giants. Before being traded to the Giants, he played for multiple times. Everyone thinks that the reason for him bouncing around so much from team to team is because of his bipolar disorder. Coaches from the previous teams he has played think he is a liability in the locker room. He would get into all different types of altercations with his teammates causing bad locker room chemistry and issues with teammates.  Another big athlete you might have heard of that has bipolar disorder is Metta World Peace or Ron Artest. Miki Kowalski HST 2000 10/10/17 Bipolar Disorder in the News After doing some research online about bipolar disorder and what it has been in the news for recently, I stumbled upon this article by US News. In this article, it talks about how bipolar disorder relates to depression. People think that bipolar and depression is very similar, but they are not. Dr. Ellen Frank states that “I have seen a handful of patients, maybe three or four, who claimed they had never been depressed, but they didn’t recognize the depressive episodes.” The NIMH says that there is not a single cause for bipolar disorder, but there are several things that they can take into account and consider a cause. One thing that they have noticed was that if a child has depression growing up, they are increasing their risk to get bipolar disorder later in life. That being said, parents need to pay very close attention to their kids, because no one wants their children growing up depressed and then h...

Miki Kowalski 9/15/17 HST 2000 Bipolar Disorder “According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 5.7 million people struggle with bipolar disorder; studies have found that 50% start showing signs before age 19. One out of five bipolar will commit suicide”. Bipolar disorder caught my eye while reading about it because it affects so many people. This affects men and women equally. Someone who suffers from bipolar disorder can go from being energetic and outgoing to feeling almost worthless and depressed within a span of a few days or a few months. This disorder can be caused by many things. It can be inherited through your parent's genes or it can be caused by a great amount of stress and conflict in a person’s environment. After doing further research online, I found plenty of interesting facts on bipolar disorder. The usual age of bipolar disorder is the late teen's too early twenties. Also, bipolar disorder is not curable. That being said, people with i...
